Join Our Team as One of Our Book Interior Layout Designers
You have an eye for good design, are creative with an extreme attention to detail, and you’re highly efficient using InDesign. If that sounds like you, keep reading. We’re looking for a reliable team member to complete the technical work related to design and print file preparation for print and e-version of books.
What is your role?
You will be an external and independent contractor – one of our primary Book Designers on call.
Your primary points of contact will be our Book Production Manager and Book Production Supervisor, but your ultimate job is to delight our customers by making their book come to life on the page!
Book Launchers helps entrepreneurs and professionals to publish high-quality non-fiction books. But, this is not a traditional publishing company. Our authors retain all control and ownership over the content and keep all royalties. We provide the team and the guidance to help our authors not only write and publish but also to achieve their business objectives through their book. It’s not just about selling books (although we help guide them through how to sell books too!). It’s about using a book to build a business, boost a brand, become a recognized expert all while sharing valuable expertise and experience with others.
Specific Tasks Include:
- Preparing the book manuscript for InDesign – we typically have files in a Word Document which needs to be prepped for InDesign before you can design the book. We will be asking for samples of your work, as well as doing a test on your InDesign skills to ensure you know how to do this work effectively and efficiently. If you aren’t even sure why we include this as a line item in the job description, this role is not for you.
- Using the Cover and Book Details to create an eye-catching and clean interior design sample – this takes talent as much as experience. Our authors give us some guidance about what they want to see, but we rely heavily on our designers to figure out the best possible design for each unique book. We do not use design templates. Each interior is custom for each book. And, we want each interior to provide a great reading experience for each person who holds the book, whether in print or on an e-device.
- Produce the interior design for print and e-pub and handle up to three rounds of line edits.
- Prepare the print and e-files for the manuscript uploads.
Every project has a timeline so we will have a rough idea of when we’ll need you so you can plan your schedule accordingly, but as Book Designer on call, we do ask that you provide the sample design within 5 business days of starting the contract, the complete book design for line edit within 5 business days after receipt of feedback on the sample, and revisions and final drafts within 3 business days of receiving the author’s input. If this sounds good to you please include samples of your work (including an InDesign file you worked on) when you apply using the form linked below.
Head over to the ‘Join Our Team‘ page and complete the form and upload your proposal!
If this doesn’t sound right for you, but you know someone who would be perfect for this position, please pass it along and make sure we know who to thank if we hire them. 🙂
