Why Sell Your Books Direct?

Selling your books directly to readers allows you to:

  • Collect valuable customer data like email addresses for ongoing marketing.
  • Keep more profit by avoiding retailer fees.
  • Build a stronger relationship with your audience.

If you’re wondering why selling direct is such a big deal, I’ve covered it in-depth in another video, which I’ll link to at the end.

What Is StoryOrigin?

StoryOrigin is a versatile tool for authors offering features like:

  • Universal book links
  • Beta reader management
  • Newsletter swaps
  • Review copies
  • Audiobook review copies

And now, they’ve added a direct sales option for ebooks!

Selling Ebooks Direct with StoryOrigin

To sell your ebook direct, StoryOrigin integrates with Lemon Squeezy, a payment processor that simplifies the process.

Why Lemon Squeezy?

  • Handles sales tax: Lemon Squeezy acts as the merchant of record, taking care of tax collection and remittance.
  • Ease of setup: It’s a no-code solution with various payment options in multiple currencies.
  • Competitive fees: StoryOrigin authors get a discounted transaction fee of $0.30 + 5%.

If you’re already using payment processors like PayPal, Stripe, or Shopify, Lemon Squeezy might seem unnecessary. But for authors just starting with direct sales, it’s a great option.

How to Set Up Direct Sales on StoryOrigin

Here’s how I tested the process:

1. Create an Account

Set up an account on StoryOrigin and Lemon Squeezy.

2. Prepare Your Ebook Files

You’ll need a .MOBI file to sell your ebook through StoryOrigin. Here’s why:

  • Kindle devices can’t directly open EPUB files. When you send an EPUB to a Kindle email, Amazon converts it into a Kindle-friendly format on their backend. However, for direct downloads, a .MOBI file is required.
  • Side-loading EPUBs isn’t user-friendly for most readers, so providing a .MOBI file ensures compatibility.

3. Convert EPUB to .MOBI

If you don’t already have a .MOBI file, here’s how to create one:

  • StoryOrigin Converter: StoryOrigin uses Calibre for a quick and easy conversion. Just upload your EPUB, and it will generate a .MOBI file for you in seconds.
  • Vellum: If you use Vellum for formatting, you can output a .MOBI file in the generation settings.
  • Kindle Previewer: Amazon’s Kindle Previewer also converts EPUBs to .MOBI. Simply drag and drop your EPUB file and export it as a .MOBI.

What If You Already Have a Payment Processor?

If you’re like me and don’t want another payment processor, you can still use StoryOrigin’s direct delivery feature. Here’s how:

  1. Process Payments Through Your Own System
Use your existing payment processor (e.g., PayPal, Stripe, or Shopify).
  2. Automate Ebook Delivery
After payment, automate sending a direct download link to buyers via StoryOrigin.

My Experience with StoryOrigin

Setting up the direct sales feature was straightforward, but I hit a few snags along the way:

  • File requirements: Not having a .MOBI file stalled me initially. Fortunately, the StoryOrigin converter made it easy to create one.
  • Browser issues: I encountered some technical hiccups, so if you face problems, try switching browsers (Google Chrome worked best for me).

While I decided not to proceed with Lemon Squeezy (due to already having several payment processors), I can see the value for authors who want an all-in-one solution.

Is StoryOrigin Right for You?

StoryOrigin’s direct sales feature is ideal if:

  • You’re looking for a simple, beginner-friendly solution for selling ebooks direct.
  • You don’t want to manage tax collection or remittance yourself.
  • You’re not already tied to multiple payment processors.

For authors with more advanced setups, you can still leverage StoryOrigin’s delivery tools without switching payment processors.

Final Thoughts

Selling ebooks directly to readers is a powerful way to grow your author business. StoryOrigin makes it easy to get started, whether you’re using their full suite of tools or integrating with your existing systems.
