Your book is done and you want to create an audiobook version of your book … in your voice … without recording it yourself. Thanks to technology you can do it. We have cloned voices and produced audiobooks using ElevenLabs. If you’re not a technically inclined person this process won’t be for you, but if you’re comfortable with software and are excited to try something new, here is how to clone your voice and turn your book into an audiobook.
Please note, this method is not accepted by many platforms yet for distribution but it’s an innovative way to produce an audiobook efficiently and at a lower cost.
Here are the steps to clone your voice and produce your audiobook:
1. Prepare Your Manuscript for Audiobook Production
Your manuscript needs to be fully polished before you start. Ensure it’s the final version, with any images replaced by descriptive text, as images won’t translate in the narration. Clean up any URLs because they can sound awkward when read by a bot.
2. Choose Your AI Platform to Clone Your Voice
Several AI platforms can help you create an audiobook. The top three are BHuman, ElevenLabs, and Descript. For this guide, we’ll focus on ElevenLabs, which has been extensively used for audiobook production. Here’s how you can get started with ElevenLabs:
3. Create an Account
First, create an account on ElevenLabs. You’ll need to upgrade to their pro account for $99/month to produce an entire audiobook. The process is straightforward, and if you’re keen on using AI for this purpose, you’ll find it manageable.
4. Clone Your Voice
To clone your voice effectively, you’ll need to upload three different voice samples:
- A studio-quality recording of you reading as if narrating an audiobook, emphasizing words and ensuring clear pronunciation.
- A natural conversation recording using a simple headset.
- A professionally edited audiobook narration.
Uploading around 30-60 minutes of these recordings will yield the best results. You can also use ElevenLabs’ new feature for professional voice cloning by uploading studio-recorded audio.
5. Adjusting the AI Settings
After uploading your voice samples, you can tweak the settings to improve the replication quality. Experiment with different settings to find the most natural-sounding voice for your audiobook.
6. Upload Your Manuscript
Create a project on ElevenLabs with your cloned voice and upload your manuscript chapter by chapter. Be sure to clean up your text, removing any oddities like page numbers and URLs that can disrupt the listening experience.
7. Review Each Chapter and Edit as Needed
Before converting the entire book, test a small section to ensure the quality meets your expectations. Listen to the converted content and make necessary adjustments. If needed, change the tone or emphasis for certain paragraphs to enhance the narration. This does take some fine tuning to produce the best quality result but it is worth it if you plan to sell the audiobook.
8. Finalizing Your Audiobook
Once satisfied with the quality, convert the remaining chapters. Remember to proof-listen to the entire audiobook to catch any errors or oddities.
Narrating your audiobook with AI is a cost-effective and time-saving solution. While it’s not perfect and some platforms might not accept AI-narrated books yet, it’s an excellent way to distribute your audiobook through platforms like Book Funnel. With practice and tweaking, you can achieve a high-quality narration that closely resembles your natural voice.
