Grow Your Business with a Book: 7 Reasons Why Your Business Needs a Book

Published on: 09/18/2024

Hey there, business owner! Julie Broad from Book Launchers here. Got a business? Great! Written a book? No? Well, I’m about to share why that needs to change ASAP. Writing a book is a great way to grow a business.

My book “Self-Publish and Succeed” has been a game-changer for Book Launchers, adding hundreds of thousands of dollars to our revenue each year. It’s landed me podcast interviews, speaking gigs, and even helped us attract top-notch employees. So, if you don’t have a book yet, let me ask you… why the heck not? If it’s because you need a ghostwriter – we have fabulous writers! If you’re not sure where to begin, well keep reading!

After working with over 600 authors (many of them savvy business owners) and using books to grow my businesses for 11 years, here are 7 reasons why writing a book is smart business strategy:

1. Clarity and Vision (AKA The “Aha!” Moment Machine)

Okay, this might not be where you thought I’d start because it’s not directly about money – but trust me, it leads to the green stuff. Writing a book is like giving your brain a hardcore workout. It forces you to:

  • Clarify your ideas (bye-bye, fuzzy thinking!)
  • Refine your message (hello, crystal-clear communication … and clear communication means more sales!)
  • Develop a killer marketing vision for your business that everyone can get excited about.

This is the hard work that separates you from AI-generated fluff. It’s about digging deep, reflecting on your pivotal moments, and figuring out how to share your unique perspective in a way that’ll knock your readers’ socks off. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love some AI Tools for author support … here are my favorite five:

2. Establishing Authority and Credibility (Or How to Become the Go-To Guru)

Just publishing a book doesn’t automatically make you the next industry rockstar. This takes effort and consistency.

Lorea Martinez started as an unknown but used her book to build a brand and become someone whose expertise is in demand. Now Barnes & Noble is ordering her book in bulk! The secret? Continuously promote your book, get on podcasts, hit the stage if that’s your jam.

As another example of what a book can do, I recently recommended two speakers to a Las Vegas business owner for their event. Guess who caught their eye? Renie Cavallari, simply because I mentioned she “wrote the book on this” with her title “Head Trash”. She booked the gig and I’ll see her in Las Vegas in November. That’s the power of being able to say you literally wrote the book on a topic! Go Renie!

3. Attracting Ideal Clients (Like a Magnet for Your Perfect Customers)

Your book is like a beacon, attracting readers who are likely to become your dream clients. It’s all about addressing their specific needs, challenges, and secret desires. Speaking of which… want a free copy of “Self-Publish and Succeed”? Hop over to BookLaunchers.com/freeaudiobook and grab the audio version. You’re welcome!

Now only does the book attract clients though, but it can also shorten the sales cycle of high ticket decisions. Whether you run an advisory firm and charge high fees for your expertise or you have a mastermind group, a book will help. A reader decides they like you and would want to work with you. This means when they call they aren’t trying to decide if they like and trust you, they are confirming fit of service so they can say yes or no. It takes away the ‘I have to think about it’ cycle that can go on forever.

4. Passive Income for Your Lead Generation (AKA Getting Paid to Market Yourself)

Imagine this: people paying you to read your marketing material. That’s what a book does! It becomes a source of passive income and leads, especially after the initial promotion phase. Include some smart calls-to-action and watch as readers transform into subscribers and potential clients.

My favorite part? A great book is marketing that people willingly pass along. It’s the gift that keeps on giving (and selling). People will rarely throw a book out so your book can be generating leads for years and years. My first book, More than Cashflow, came out in 2013. I haven’t been in the Canadian real estate industry actively in eight years but that book still has people reaching out to me.

5. Differentiation in a Crowded Market

In industries where everyone’s credentials look the same (I’m looking at you, financial planners), a book can be your secret weapon. Take Bruce Hosler, who wrote “Moving to Tax Free”. While everyone else is yapping about having enough for retirement, Bruce’s asking, “But what about those pesky taxes on your retirement distributions?” Boom! Instant differentiation that’s landed him on Fox News.

It also makes it easier for a friend to refer someone to you. If you have a book they can say, ‘check out this book’ and it’s an easier referral for some people.

6. Monetize the Content (Turning Your Book into a Content Goldmine)

Your book is just the beginning. It’s like the sourdough starter of content (yes, I went there). You can turn it into:

I’ve even cloned myself (sort of) with our new Author Business Accelerator program. You can chat with “Julie the book bot” about your book idea or marketing plan. She’s been trained on everything I’ve ever said publicly or to clients. Scary smart, right?

7. Attracting and Training Team Members (Your Book as a Recruitment Secret Weapon)

Your book isn’t just for clients – it’s a powerful tool for building your dream team. Use it to:

  • Attract like-minded professionals who resonate with your message
  • Train new team members on your methods and values
  • Showcase your company culture to potential hires

Remember, putting your methods in a book won’t make your services obsolete. Some business owners worry that someone won’t hire them if they reveal all their secrets, but that just isn’t true! The DIY crowd isn’t your ideal client anyway. Think about it – how many people read Chris Voss’s book and think they’re suddenly master negotiators? Nope, they want to hire Chris and his team even more.

Remember, a strategically crafted book isn’t an overnight success story, but with the right approach, it can be the rocket fuel your business needs to reach new heights. So, what are you waiting for? Your bestseller (and business growth) awaits!
